Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants come with a variety of excellent benefits for patients. Dental implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, so no one should be able to tell your implants apart from your other teeth when you speak or smile. Dental implants also:

  • Prevent jawbone loss
  • Maintain the shape of the face
  • Prevent other teeth from shifting
  • Can be treated like natural teeth
  • Are not removable, except by a dentist
  • Last a lifetime with proper care

The Dental Implant Process

Once your gums have been numbed completely, a small incision is made, and a titanium post is carefully placed in the jawbone. During the healing process, which takes several weeks, the gums will heal and the post will begin to fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. A temporary denture can be used while your new artificial tooth is custom designed and created. The next appointment will involve attaching your custom restoration to the post and ensuring that it looks and feels natural and blends in with the surrounding teeth. The process takes a few months to ensure that you end up with a healthy, functional smile.

Hybrid Dentures

If you need all or most of your teeth replaced, using a single implant to replace each tooth would be costly, invasive, and lengthen the healing process. Fortunately, patients who need to replace a full arch of teeth with dentures can still receive the benefits of dental implants if they choose to utilize hybrid dentures. Hybrid dentures only require a few implants to be strategically placed throughout the mouth, usually four per arch. Then, a custom denture is created that easily attaches to the implants. Hybrid dentures are more stable; they won’t slip or cause sore gums like traditional dentures. They are also removable, which makes them easy to clean and maintain.
